Im trying to locate my father-in-laws military records. He served in Vietnam and was awarded the purple heart. He passed away about 2 and a half years ago, and his records seem to disapperared. If some one can atleast give me a good starting point it would be appreciated, as im trying to locate these things for my wife.

if you are active duty go to your S-1 and they can help I did go there and they gave me the same info that Vince did. The first place that I would go would be the main records center National Personnel Records Center Military Personnel Records 9700 Page Avenue St. Louis, MO 63132-5100 www.archives.gov/st-louis/military-personnel/However, there was a fire there in the 1970's and many records were lost. They may have reconstructed most records. However, there are duplicate records held at the unit your father-in-law served in and if you know it, that would be a help. Also, try the county clerk where he lived after he was discharged, they copy the DD-214 to register it. Also, someone who really knows the ins and outs of military records is Victor Charlie, who posts on this board. Maybe someone could tell him that his name has come up.

They had a link on their site about the fire. It appears the records that were lost were Army and Air Force. Lucky for me he was a Marine. Im gonna give it a shot and hopefully it will work out. Thanks again for you help!

I don't know if this helps but I found some of my grandfather's army personnel records on the National Archives website. They are going through a long process of scanning this information, so if they have gotten to it you might find something there.
