Remember When: Steel Pier was the gateway to a life in S.J. Jan. 13, 2014 Remember When invites readers to recall special times in South Jersey. Today, a Pennsylvania native shares how he came to settle on the other side of the Delaware River. My earliest memory of South Jersey was appearing on Steel Pier in 1951. At the time, I was in high school in Delaware County. The pier was in a state of decline and as an aspiring singer, I answered an ad in the paper. Singing is also how I met my future wife, Jean, on Channel 12 in 1955. We married in 1959 at Holy Maternity Church on Nicholson Road in Audubon. Jean grew up in Audubon, and I made my life here after our marriage. We have been married 54 years, living first in Audubon and presently in Atco. Jim Shockley Atco
